A Diverse Range of Festivals in Somerset This Summer
As the fields at Worthy Farm return to their natural state, there is a wealth of other festivals taking place across Somerset this summer. From music events to food celebrations, these gatherings offer something for everyone.
Party at the Palace in Wells
This Saturday, July 12, the Bishop’s Palace in Wells will host the Party at the Palace. The event features a variety of musical acts including Seth Lakeman, The Wurzels, Mad Dog Mcrea, 3 Daft Monkeys, and the Wells City Band. It promises to be a lively celebration of music and community.
21st Century ABBA by Moonlight
On Sunday, a tribute evening titled 21st Century ABBA by Moonlight will take place starting at 7:30pm. This event offers a nostalgic look back at the iconic band’s music, with a special focus on the songs that defined a generation.
Somerstock Music Festival
Somerstock, a two-day family-friendly music festival in Somerton, begins on Friday, July 11. The event kicks off with an evening of live bands and continues throughout Saturday with music until 11pm. Highlights include The Britpop Boys, Cut Capers, Snappa, Nick Parker and the False Alarms, as well as local DJs and a silent disco. Family tickets are available at great value, with children under 12 admitted for free.
The Godney Gathering
Founded in 2011, the Godney Gathering has grown into a comprehensive family festival. This year’s event takes place on Friday, July 18, and Saturday, July 19. Attendees can enjoy performances from The Enemy, Lucy Spraggan, and Dreadzone. Under 10-year-olds can attend for free, making it a perfect event for families.
Somerset Food Trail Festival
Running from Friday, July 18, to Sunday, July 27, the Somerset Food Trail Festival celebrates the county’s sustainable food and drink. The festival showcases local farmers, producers, and chefs who prioritise nature-friendly practices. Visitors can participate in tastings, talks, and farm tours, with many events offered free of charge. The trail also provides access to parts of the countryside that are usually off-limits, offering a unique insight into the region’s food culture.
Minehead Bay Festival
On Saturday, August 30, Minehead’s seafront will come alive with the Minehead Bay Festival. This free, family-friendly event features live music, street food, art, and culture. Originally started as a local initiative in 2022, it has since become one of West Somerset’s most vibrant festivals, supported by the National Lottery Community Fund. The event includes music, circus performances, workshops, and wellbeing sessions, ensuring there is something for all ages.
Girt Dog Gathering
The Girt Dog Gathering returns to Langport from Thursday, August 7, to Sunday, August 10. This four-day off-grid festival celebrates music, arts, and community. The line-up includes acts such as System 7, Loona Loop, 3 Daft Monkeys, Dragonsfly, Invisible Eyes, and Psycho Acoustic Goat. Alongside the music, there are Avalon Rising Talks & Workshops covering topics from esoteric practices to practical skills. Notable speakers include Lynne Franks, Bowler Hat Farmer, Shaun Kirwan, Clive de Carle, and Muji. Additional activities include ecstatic dance sessions, late-night DJ sets, a speakeasy bar, acoustic stages, and more. All food and drink vendors use locally sourced produce, with profits supporting community initiatives.
Kilve Stock and Barrel
Kilve Stock and Barrel returns for its second year on Saturday, August 23, and Sunday, August 24, at the village cricket club. Performances will feature Sophie Sefton, Sarah Parker Randle, No Fixed Abode, Jordan Lindsay, and Dr & The Medics.
10 Parishes Festival
From Saturday, September 6, to Sunday, September 14, the 10 Parishes Festival will showcase visual and performing arts. The event includes artists’ open studios, performances, talks, and tours in Wiveliscombe and surrounding villages. One of the highlights is the return of Baroque super-group Red Priest, who will perform ‘Baroque Extravaganza’ following their sell-out concert in 2021.
