Vet Reveals Five Dog Breeds He’d Never Own

Understanding Dog Breeds: A Veterinarian’s Perspective

When considering getting a dog, it’s essential to conduct thorough research to find a breed that aligns with your lifestyle and living situation. With over 200 recognized breeds in the UK, there is likely a perfect match for any home. However, it’s crucial to perform independent research before making a decision, as each breed has unique characteristics and requirements.

A veterinarian based in South Africa, known online as Amir The Vet, has shared his “brutal opinion” on five dog breeds he would never own. His insights provide valuable information for potential pet owners looking to make an informed choice.

Siberian Husky

Amir explains that he would never own a Siberian Husky due to their high energy levels. These dogs require regular walks and ample exercise. If not properly exercised, they can become destructive. Additionally, they are known for being escape artists and have a thick coat that sheds heavily. Their vocal nature is likened to that of a “big, stubborn toddler.”

The PDSA highlights that Siberian Huskies are active and intelligent dogs always on the move. While they can be a great fit for the right home, their strength and stamina may not suit everyone. They need at least two hours of daily exercise.

English Bull Terrier

Next, Amir mentions the White Bull Terrier, also known as the English Bull Terrier. According to the PDSA, these dogs are active, loving, and have distinctive faces. While they make great pets, they can be challenging at times. Amir acknowledges their loveliness but notes their strong-willed nature and strong prey drive. He adds that they are prone to deafness and chronic skin issues.

Early and consistent training and socialization are essential for this breed.

Chihuahua

Amir would never own a Chihuahua, which are known for being yappy. These small dogs can display fear-based aggression and have a big personality despite their size. They struggle with separation anxiety and may suffer from dental disease and tracheal collapse.

The PDSA states that Chihuahuas are popular due to their small size and energetic, alert nature. While they are adaptable and can thrive in various living situations, they need plenty of mental stimulation.

English Bulldog

Although Amir appreciates the temperament of English Bulldogs, he warns about their health issues. As a brachycephalic breed, they often suffer from respiratory diseases, exercise and heat intolerance, and skin problems. The PDSA emphasizes that Bulldogs are likely to experience serious health and welfare issues due to their physical conformation, including breathing difficulties, skin problems, joint issues, and dental problems.

They recommend considering healthier breeds, crossbreeds, or mongrels instead.

Belgian Malinois

Lastly, Amir states he would never own a Belgian Malinois, also known as a Belgian Shepherd. According to the Kennel Club, these dogs are versatile herding and working dogs. They are agile, fast, and robust. Amir describes them as more like machines than pets, requiring constant physical and mental stimulation. Without proper leadership, they can become destructive and cause significant challenges for owners.

It’s important to note that these opinions are based on personal views. Potential pet owners should conduct their own research and consider their lifestyle before choosing a breed. Each dog has unique needs, and understanding these can help ensure a happy and healthy relationship between the owner and their furry companion.
