A New Era for the Galaxy Z Flip
For years, the Galaxy Z Flip series has been seen as a runner-up in the foldable phone race. Unlike its more premium sibling, the Galaxy Fold, it never quite captured that same sense of innovation and luxury. In recent times, competitors like the Motorola Razr Ultra have even started to outshine the Z Flip, making it feel less impressive among the best foldable phones on the market.
However, with the release of the Galaxy Z Flip 7, things are starting to change. During my hands-on session, I found myself almost as excited about this new model as I was about the latest Galaxy Fold. More importantly, I believe Samsung has finally tackled one of my biggest gripes with previous Flip models: the cover screen is now on par with what you’d find on some of the best Motorola phones.
Major Improvements to the Cover Display
The FlexWindow, as Samsung calls it, is now a more substantial 4.1 inches, up from the 3.4-inch display on the Galaxy Z Flip 6. This increase isn’t just about numbers—it makes a real difference in usability. The new cover display wraps around the two rear camera lenses, which is a welcome improvement.
Additionally, the refresh rate of the FlexWindow has doubled from 60Hz to 120Hz, and the bezels are much slimmer than before. While I hesitate to say it’s better outright, the design looks more impressive than the Motorola Razr Ultra’s display. It’s clear that Samsung has made significant strides in this area.
Enhanced Usability and Features
With the larger cover screen, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 becomes more practical when closed. You can access features like the Now Bar and Gemini Live directly from the FlexWindow. There are also new camera features such as Auto Framing, which adjusts the field of view to keep your subject in focus, and Real-Time Filters, allowing you to experiment with different photographic styles right from the cover screen.
Inside the Flip 7
Opening up the Galaxy Z Flip 7 reveals a bigger and wider 6.9-inch display. This makes the phone feel more like a Galaxy S25 Ultra than an oddly-shaped foldable. If not for the chunkier internal display bezels, it would be hard to tell the difference between the two devices on a flat surface.
The Galaxy Z Flip 7 measures 13.7mm when folded and 6.5mm when unfolded, which is still relatively thick compared to other foldables like the Galaxy Z Fold 7 (which is just 4.2mm). However, there has been a noticeable reduction in thickness compared to the Galaxy Z Flip 6.
Battery Life and Durability
Samsung has managed to fit a larger 4,300mAh battery into the Galaxy Z Flip 7, paired with the efficiency-focused Exynos 2500 chipset. This should result in the longest battery life ever seen in a Z Flip model. Testing of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 showed 11 hours of use, so we’re hopeful for similar results here.
Durability remains largely unchanged, with the same IP48 resistance rating as its predecessor. However, thanks to the thinner bezels on the cover screen, Samsung claims to have improved waterproofing on the circuitry. The new Armor FlexHinge is also thinner and more durable than the one on the Z Flip 6.
Camera Performance
Despite these improvements, the camera array remains the same as the Galaxy Z Flip 6. It includes a 50MP wide lens, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP selfie camera. While the photos taken were decent, the Flip 7 won’t be making a significant impact on the list of the best camera phones.
Pricing and Availability
The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is priced the same as the Galaxy Z Flip 6 globally. The 256GB model costs $1,099 / £1,049, while the 512GB version is $1,219 / £1,149. Australia pricing is yet to be confirmed. It will be available for pre-order in Blue Shadow, Jetblack, and Coral colors, with general availability starting on July 25.
Final Thoughts
Samsung has clearly focused on improving the display experience for the Galaxy Z Flip 7, making it more usable and visually appealing. While the camera hasn’t seen major upgrades, the overall improvements make the Flip 7 a strong contender in the foldable phone market. We’re currently testing the device thoroughly and will share our full verdict soon, including our thoughts on its value for money.
