A Royal Return: The Princess of Wales Shines at Windsor Castle
The Princess of Wales made a striking return to the world of royal banquets, gracing the historic St George’s Hall at Windsor Castle in a dark red silk creponne evening gown from the renowned French fashion house Givenchy. Designed by Sarah Burton, the same designer who created her wedding dress, the choice of Givenchy was a thoughtful gesture towards the King’s guests, including French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron.
The event brought together around 160 distinguished guests, among them high-profile figures such as Sir Mick Jagger and Sir Elton John. The Princess was joined by the King, Queen Camilla, and the Prince of Wales, creating a moment of regal splendour that captured public attention.
This appearance marked a significant milestone for the Princess, who had previously been absent from grand royal dinners for 20 months. Her last such engagement was in November 2023, when she attended a banquet in honour of the South Korean president. Now, with her health restored after battling cancer in 2024, she returned to the spotlight with grace and poise.
Her evening gown featured a caped back design, adding an elegant touch to her overall look. She also wore her beloved Lover’s Knot tiara, a piece that has become synonymous with the late Princess Diana. With her hair flowing freely, the Princess exuded a timeless charm, capturing the hearts of onlookers.
As she arrived at the banquet, the Princess was seen smiling and exchanging glances with her husband, Prince William, as they walked side by side. She carried a lily of the valley embroidered clutch and adorned herself with several prestigious royal orders, including the Rosette of Grand Officier de l’ordre national du mérite, the Royal Family Orders of King Charles III and Queen Elizabeth II, and the Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.
Earlier in the day, the Princess was spotted smiling in the gardens of Windsor alongside Prince William, with Kensington Palace sharing a social media post that read: “Ready for what promises to be a wonderful State Banquet this evening in Windsor.”
Prince William, too, made a strong impression, dressed in white tie and adorned with the Most Noble Order of the Garter Sash, along with various miniature medals and chest orders. His presence added to the regal atmosphere of the evening.
The Princess had recently opened up about her journey through cancer treatment, describing it as a “rollercoaster” and reflecting on its life-changing impact. During a visit to Colchester Hospital, she spoke about the importance of maintaining a “brave face” during difficult times.
At the banquet, the Princess was seated next to President Macron, engaging in conversation before the King’s toast. On her other side was art historian Christophe Leribault, chairman of the Musee D’Orsay. Her academic background in the history of art was evident in her thoughtful interactions.
Queen Camilla, meanwhile, dazzled in an ivory silk and crepe embroidered evening gown by Fiona Clare, complemented by a sapphire and diamond tiara, necklace, earrings, and bracelet from Queen Elizabeth II’s sapphire suite. She also wore the Legion d’Honneur French sash, Garter Star, and the King’s family order.
Mrs Macron made a striking entrance in a vivid blue caped evening gown with gold epaulettes-style details on the shoulders, showcasing her own flair for fashion.
For both Prince William and the Princess, this was their first time attending a Windsor Castle banquet, with the last one taking place in 2014 for the Irish President Michael D Higgins. Their participation in the recent French state visit highlighted their commitment to diplomatic engagements, accompanying the Macrons throughout the day’s events.
In addition to the formalities, the Princess embraced French fashion during her daytime engagements, choosing a blush pink Dior jacket from the 2024 collection. The piece, reimagined by Maria Grazia Chiuri, drew inspiration from the original design by Christian Dior himself. She paired it with a tulle skirt and a sleek hat by Jess Collett.
The Princess also received a warm welcome from Mr Macron, who kissed her hand upon their meeting at RAF Northolt. This gesture of courtesy underscored the positive relationship between the royal family and the French leadership.
The evening at Windsor Castle was a testament to the enduring traditions of the British monarchy, while also highlighting the personal resilience and elegance of the Princess of Wales.
